Department of Cloud Platforms and Data Services

The department conducts research, technological development, and innovation in the field of cloud computing and its exploitation for the development of innovative information systems and services. In this context, issues such as the development and support of various cloud service delivery models (e.g., Function as a service (FaaS) Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)) for hosting big data platforms, data and service catalogues and markets, secure processing and outsourcing of data and services to third parties, end-to-end big data analysis services in the cloud and at the edge, cloud native end-user applications for data analytics, as well as related tools and technologies, are covered.

Major achievements of the Department during the past few years include:

  • Collaboration with Industry: IMSI had been contracted by Intracom Telecom S.A. and Ericsson S.A to design and develop a cloud native big data solution and methods for stream analytics on network data coming from IoT devices. This project is ongoing (more than 400K private funding since 2018), while IMSI has been contracted for additional R&D projects (G. Papastefanatos is the PI).
  • EU Funding. The project MORE: Real-Time Management of Energy Analytics (Horizon 2020) led by Athena, was ranked first (score 15/15) among all other proposals in the relevant call (M. Terrovitis is the PI).
  • Best Paper Awards: The publication of M. Meimaris, G. Papastefanatos, P. Vassiliadis titled Hierarchical Property Set Merging for SPARQL Query Optimization received the best paper award in the DOLAP ‘20 workshop (jointly with EDBT/ICDT 2020).
  • The publication of Nikos Bikakis, Stavros Maroulis, George Papastefanatos, and Panos Vassiliadis - RawVis: Visual Exploration over Raw Data" received the best paper award at the 22nd European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems (ADBIS 2018).

The group had an excellent research record having 7 publications in top ranked data management venues (VLDBJ, TKDE, Information Systems, SIGMOD, EDBT) in the last 5 years.
