The ECHOES (European Cloud for Heritage OpEn Science) project, funded by the European Commission and UK Research and Innovation, aims to create the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH), a shared platform for heritage professionals and researchers to access data, scientific resources, and digital tools tailored to their needs. The project brings together fragmented communities within the Cultural Heritage (CH) field, facilitating collaboration through a Digital Commons.
ECHOES aims to revolutionize the CH field by enabling the digitization of both tangible and intangible heritage knowledge and the collaborative analysis of CH assets. Through a digital environment that empowers users to interact with, manipulate, and enrich Digital Twins—virtual representations of cultural assets — both human and AI actors will generate new scientific knowledge. Anchored in Open Access and Open Science principles, ECCCH will democratize access to knowledge and digital assets, creating a new generation of semantically rich heritage objects – “the heritage of tomorrow.” At the project's conclusion, ECHOES will deliver a sustainable platform integrating results from EU and national CH projects, supported by an inclusive legal entity.
Athena Research Center participates in ECHOES as affiliate to DARIAH with a project team bringing together expertise from two institutes, IMSI and ILSP, and led by Prof. Panos Constantopoulos. Athena RC will contribute to the project along three directions:
- Designing semantic structures and workflows for the Digital Commons knowledge base.
- Communication and dissemination activities targeting the research community, professionals, and the public.
- Planning for long-term sustainability and impact assessment.
